Keeping a Promise
Shortly after arriving in Door County almost two weeks ago, I told my daughter in a phone conversation it was my intention to ride on Skyline Drive in Peninsula State Park every day of my stay. Luckily for me, the weather was absolutely perfect for biking, except for last Sunday when it rained in the morning, but of course, I was serving at Bethany Lutheran, so by the time the rain stopped in the afternoon, I was ready to go!
The ride on Skyline is my favorite bike ride, even when I include the fact that I have to go up and down the ridge of Peninsula twice because of staying in Ephraim.
On four of my bike rides through the park I stopped at Eagle Tower, recently renovated and upgraded to make it accessible, including people in wheelchairs and scooters. The tower’s unique construction of a long, gradual deck, with benches along the way, makes it navigable for many people who would never have been able to ascend the previous Eagle Towers. I love taking the long way up, on the Eagle Tower’s Canopy Walk, before arriving at the top. Although the tower is now fifteen feet shorter than Eagle Tower II which was completed in 1932, the tower offers panoramic views of the park, surrounding islands, the Upper Michigan shoreline, and Eagle Harbor in the Village of Ephraim.
The accessibility of the tower reminded me of how wonderful it is to have an accessible church building. Accessibility is more than a facility, as we are a church where all are welcome.
See you in church!!
