Giving Thanks!

When I was growing up, our family had a tradition of driving to and from Angola, Indiana, on the same day. I recall that we used to spend Thanksgiving night at a motel close to my great-aunt’s house, but somewhere along the way, we began to make the two five-hour drives back-to-back with a little turkey and football in between. Those trips to Angola are some of my favorite memories of growing up and spending time with my father’s side of the family. We crammed as many as twenty-five or thirty people into the small home where my great-aunt lived on a quiet street. At first, I ate at one of the kids’ tables, tucked into the den, or on a small enclosed porch off the kitchen.  Those meals hold some of the strongest memories, as my brothers and cousin Ron and I usually ate together. If we had iPhones back then, we would have proof of the brussel sprouts hidden in someone’s mashed potatoes or drowning in someone’s milk.

Over the years, my siblings and I reminisce about those days and share stories of our family members who used to sit at those tables with us. I hope the memories that you share with your family and friends this week are sweet ones.

See you in church!!
