Time Marches On

Whenever we arrive at this time of year I am reminded almost every day of my past experiences as swim coach. I took on the head coaching position of the Plymouth High School Boys Swim and Dive Team almost twenty years ago! This weekend is the Sectional Meet weekend. For most of my tenure, Plymouth swimmers and divers were a factor in the individual events and competed for the overall team title or runners-up for many of the thirteen years that I coached.

As the memories pop-up on my Facebook feed there is usually a feeling of how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to be a coach. You can see from the image below the different emotions I would experience at a meet. (By the way, it’s the same young man in both pictures, on the left is from January 2010 when he was a senior, on the right is from February 2018, when our team had just won the 400 Free Relay and he was now my assistant coach.)

While it’s nice to have the feelings of euphoria and joy for, it’s also important to embrace the moments that are difficult or even sad. You truly cannot have joy without experiencing some sadness, there should be a balance in our lives of those two things.

What brings you joy?

See you in church!
